Born in 1964, Brazilian guitarist Cristina Azuma has given concerts since the early age of 16, beginning in its native country then moving to the Americas, Europe and the Far East. She has attended numerous festivals in Paris, La Havana, Martinica, Cordoba, Ezstergom, Tokyo, Turkey, Peru and Ecuador performing at the prestigious London Concert Hall, with a live broadcast by the BBC World Service, the Frankfurt Opera and the Church of Saint-Germain-des-Près in Paris.
She has collaborated with renowned guitarists Paulo Bellinati, Celso Machado, Pablo Marquez and Norberto Pedreira while also partecipating at the Festival di Campos do Jordão in Brazil under the baton of Gunther Schuller.
Cristina Azuma is a well known instrumentalist on the international music scene, thanks to the quality of her interpretations as well as for her extensive repertoire going far beyond the world of the classical guitar.
Her recordings have received international prizes with “Contatos” being finalist in the 1995 Indie Awards (yearly American selection of the best five solo Classical CDs, being organized by the specialized press) and “E de lei” winner of the Prix de Creation Musicale (being held in Martinica by the Carrefour Mondial de la Guitare).
Her works for guitar are published in the USA under the GSP label.
Cristina has received a Degree in Musicology at the Sorbonne University with a thesis centered on the late XVII century and co-ordinates series of musical guitar works for the French publisher Henri Lemoine.
